Rep. Clyburn: ‘I Will Support’ Harris if Biden Steps Aside
President Joe Biden has not met with top congressional Democrats following an alarming debate performance last week, including Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), the co-chair of the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign. Despite mixed reactions from his House colleagues, Rep. Clyburn remains steadfast in his support for the Biden-Harris ticket.
In an interview with Andrea Mitchell, Clyburn was asked about his stance on President Biden’s future following the highly criticized debate performance. Mitchell queried, “Congressman, how would you feel if there is a decision for him to step down? If he decides that and he has to decide that, or if the party pressures him to do that, how would you feel if they worked around and try to go around Kamala Harris because of her lack of high poll numbers and popularity and broadly based? Or do you think it is hers to have if it’s not his?”

Clyburn responded unequivocally, “I will support her if [Biden] were to step aside, but I’m going to support her going forward sometime in the future. I want this ticket to continue to be Biden-Harris. Then we will see what happens after the next election.”
His statement underscores a commitment to Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasizing that the Democratic Party should rally around her regardless of her current poll numbers. “No, this should not in any way do anything to work around Ms. Harris. We should do everything we can to bolster her whether it’s in second place or the top of the ticket,” Clyburn added.

Clyburn’s endorsement is significant, reflecting a broader sentiment within the party to maintain unity and support for Harris. As the Biden-Harris campaign navigates through turbulent times, Clyburn’s backing provides a crucial pillar of stability and encouragement for the vice president.
The Democratic Party now faces critical decisions regarding its leadership and strategy as it prepares for the 2024 election. With key figures like Rep. Clyburn advocating for continued support of Harris, the party’s direction remains closely watched by political observers and constituents alike.
