Trump Taps Fox News Star and Army Vet Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Fox News host and Army combat veteran Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. Trump praised Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First.” He declared, “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice—Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”
Known for his strong advocacy for veterans, Hegseth has long promoted a “Peace through Strength” policy. Trump highlighted his dedication, stating, “Nobody fights harder for the Troops.” Hegseth, a former infantry officer with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, brings firsthand experience and a deep understanding of military issues to this role.
Fox News confirmed Hegseth’s departure from the network, where he hosted Fox & Friends Weekend since 2017. A Fox spokesperson commented, “Pete Hegseth has been an exceptional host on FOX & Friends and FOX Nation… His insights resonated deeply with our viewers.” The network added that it’s “extremely proud” of his work and wished him well in Washington.
Hegseth’s nomination signals a shift in Defense Department leadership. Supporters see this as a step toward strengthening Trump’s vision for a renewed and formidable military.
