Kaylee McGhee White: Democrats’ Focus on Trump Shows Lack of Substance

Mary Katharine Ham and Kaylee McGhee White sat down with Laura Ingraham to examine the Democratic National Convention’s latest themes and the implications that stem from it.

Ham critiqued the convention’s focus on “fan service” rather than appealing to swing voters, questioning the effectiveness of Kamala Harris’s shift away from the “democracy in peril” narrative. She argued that the campaign’s new approach might not resonate as intended.

I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Ham said. “I think the campaign about nothing where she gets asked no questions was better than the the one about democracy dying.”

McGhee White, on the other hand, drew a parallel between the anti-Israel protests and the ideological currents within the party, suggesting that the same views fueling protests are influencing Democratic strategies.

“I spoke with many of the young adults my age who were out there protesting, and I realized something. That the same ideology underpinning those anti-Israel protests, leading them to call Kamala killer Kamala, is the exact same ideology that the Democratic Party has been running on for years,” McGhee White explained.

“These kids didn’t get terms like settler colonialism or oppression or genocide from nowhere. They got them from democratic controlled institutions, from universities, from corporations. And that’s why Joe Biden got up on that stage last night and could not condemn them, because he actually shares their ideology.”

Ingraham found irony in Hillary Clinton’s speech, emphasizing freedom and justice while contrasting it with recent violence and chaos.

Ham and McGhee White both agreed that the Democrats are struggling to move beyond their 2016 and 2020 focus on Donald Trump.

“Trump’s campaign tweeted this out earlier that yesterday during the speeches on that stage, they mentioned Donald Trump’s name 134 times,” McGhee White said.

“They mentioned immigration about eight times. They mentioned the economy even less. They don’t want to talk about the issues. They don’t want to move forward. They want this to be about Donald Trump.”

Ingraham concluded that despite the Democrats’ efforts to project a joyful and optimistic image, the convention’s focus on Trump and lack of substantive discussion on pressing issues like the economy and job security might not be enough to shift public perception.
