DeSantis: California’s Sanctuary Policies Put Americans at Risk

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is blasting California’s sanctuary policies after an illegal immigrant from India received a commercial driver’s license in the state.

He confirmed the man is still in California but will be extradited to Florida. There, he will face “incredibly severe charges” before deportation. DeSantis stressed that the case proves the dangers of states granting licenses to people who entered the country illegally.

“You shouldn’t be giving illegals driver’s licenses. We don’t allow that in Florida. California does. They’ve issued probably over a million licenses to illegals in recent years,” DeSantis said. “To have somebody like that on our roadways putting people in jeopardy — yes, criminally prosecute him 100%. But I think it’s got to go beyond that.”

Florida’s Hard Line vs. California’s Open Door

Florida, he explained, does not recognize illegal alien licenses or ID cards from any other state. Nor does it accept IDs from local governments or NGOs. “We’ve tried to create an environment that makes it inhospitable for people to want to come illegally and come to Florida,” DeSantis said.

By contrast, he argued, California has pursued policies that invite illegal immigration. The state offers free healthcare, in-state tuition, and other benefits — “some of which American citizens don’t even get.”

Ultimately, DeSantis said, Congress must take stronger action. “We’re trying to do the right thing, and yet we have to bear the costs from their misguided policies,” he concluded.
