Cruz: Obama Officials Lied to Sabotage Trump After 2016 Election Win

Sen. Ted Cruz says senior Obama officials knowingly misled the public about Russian election interference in 2016. “They were lying—and they knew they were lying,” he told Laura Ingraham.

From late August through December 8, top intelligence agencies repeatedly said there was no indication that Russia had tampered with vote counts or the election outcome. DHS, the FBI, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence all came to the same conclusion.

Then, on December 9, everything flipped.

Cruz pointed to a key meeting involving James Clapper, Susan Rice, John Kerry, and Andrew McCabe. “They all come out to say, Russia. Russia. Russia. That’s why Trump got elected,” he said. “December 9 should be a day that lives in infamy. That’s when they decided to lie to the American people and sabotage a duly elected president.”

Presidential Immunity Has Limits, Cruz Warns

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity doesn’t shield everyone, according to Cruz. While official decisions—such as drone strikes—fall under immunity, the actions tied to the December 9 reversal may not.

“He’s not going to be prosecuted in all likelihood for treason,” Cruz said of Obama. “But where the criminal liability will start is with members of the Obama administration who went under oath before Congress and lied.” He named James Clapper and pointed to evidence fabrication as another area where investigations should begin.

Why Didn’t Putin Release Dirt on Hillary?

Cruz also questioned the entire basis of the “Putin wanted Trump” narrative. He cited Russian intelligence reports that allegedly detailed Hillary Clinton’s emotional instability and use of tranquilizers. “If he wanted Trump to win, he presumably would have released it,” Cruz said.

Instead, he argued, the intelligence community suppressed information that could have hurt Democrats. “Facts that are inconvenient to the Democrats’ political narrative—they disappear.”

The Real Target Was Voters, Not Trump

“This wasn’t just about Trump,” Cruz said. “It was about the voters.”

He accused Obama-era officials of weaponizing government agencies to punish Americans for electing Trump. That same mindset, he argued, led to four indictments last year. “It was their contempt for the voters,” he said, not just disdain for Trump.

Cruz called Obama “profoundly partisan” and pointed to CIA Director John Brennan’s radical roots. “He voted for the Communist Party nominee in 1976 because Jimmy Carter wasn’t liberal enough,” Cruz said. “Fast forward to Obama, and that wish came true.”

Comey Should’ve Been Fired on Day One

Looking back, Cruz said Trump’s biggest early mistake was not firing FBI Director James Comey. “He wanted to be J. Edgar Hoover,” he said. “That was one of the most consequential mistakes of the first Trump administration.”

According to Cruz, this term is different. “We’ve never seen anything like these first six months. Not during Reagan, not in our lifetimes.” He shared that Republican senators met with Trump for dinner last week to celebrate the administration’s rapid pace of achievement. “There’s a lot more to come.”
