Breaking News: Trump Sentencing in Hush Money Case Delayed Until September
A New York judge has delayed Donald Trump’s sentencing in his criminal hush money case by over two months. Originally set for July 11, the sentencing will now take place on September 18, just weeks before the November 5 presidential election.
The postponement follows a request by Trump’s attorneys to challenge his conviction. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan granted the delay to allow Trump’s legal team to file a motion to overturn the guilty verdict. This request came after a recent Supreme Court ruling that former presidents are entitled to “presumptive immunity” for all official acts performed in office.
Trump’s lawyers have until July 10 to file their motion to set aside the verdict. Prosecutors, who did not oppose the delay, must file their response by July 24. Judge Merchan has stated he will reach a decision by September 6. Trump’s sentencing will proceed on September 18 at 10 a.m. ET, “if such is still necessary,” according to Merchan’s ruling.
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has consistently maintained his innocence. He issued a statement following the announcement, calling the case a “witch hunt” and expressing confidence that his legal team will prevail.
This delay adds a new twist to the already complex political and legal landscape as Trump gears up for another presidential run. The nation remains attentive, anticipating how this significant development will impact the upcoming election and Trump’s political future.
